Every project that comes through First Matter starts the same way: as prima materia, the first substance, unresolved and full of possibility. A rough sketch. A half-formed thought. A business problem without a clear shape yet. This blog is where we start writing some of that process down.

Why a blog, and why now

First Matter works across two worlds that are usually treated as separate businesses — digital (websites, identity systems, campaign graphics) and physical (3D modeling, resin printing, FDM printing). In practice, those worlds constantly inform each other. A brand system built for a website ends up on packaging. A physical prototype reveals the need for a digital configurator. The best ideas move back and forth between screen and object more than once before they're finished.

That connective process is hard to show in a portfolio alone. A case study can tell you what shipped, but not always how the decisions got made along the way — the material tradeoffs, the interface questions, the moments a project changed direction. That's what this blog is for.

What we'll write about

Expect posts organized loosely around the studio's actual work:

  • Process notes — how a project moved from idea, to direction, to design, to build, to a finished result.
  • Material and fabrication notes — practical thinking on resin versus FDM printing, finishing, tolerances, and what changes at different scales.
  • Web design and development notes — how we approach information architecture, performance, and building sites that hold up after launch, not just at launch.
  • Identity and brand system notes — how a mark and a set of rules turn into something that works consistently across a screen, a package, and a printed object.

We're not interested in generic listicles. If a post doesn't reflect something we've actually run into on a real project, it doesn't get published here.

A studio, not a vendor

The name First Matter comes from alchemy — prima materia, the original material a transformation begins from. That's deliberate. Most worthwhile projects don't arrive as a finished brief; they arrive as a starting point that still needs direction. Our job is to figure out what an idea wants to become, in whatever medium that turns out to be, and build it completely.

This blog is one more place to make that thinking visible. If you're working on something that's still taking shape — a website that needs rebuilding, an identity that no longer fits, an object that only exists as a sketch so far — get in touch or start a project.
